How To Play Ki o Rahi?

How To Play Ki o Rahi?

Guten Tag! Have you guys heard about the game called Ki o Rahi?
Well if you have or not, I'm gonna teach you how to play that fabulous game.
First of all, this game is a Maori traditional game. We use some Maori vocabulary words to call those stuff because like I said it's a Maori game so we need to call it into its proper name.

What you'll need:

- 1 Ki (It's a ball that's called Ki)

- Lot's of Field marking cones

- 1 Tupu ( Centre Target bin)

- 7 Pou's (Poles or flags)

- 14 people to play (7 people each team)

Rules:

There are two teams that are gonna be playing. Each team have a main Job to do. One team has to be either Kioma or Taniwha.

Kioma - What Kioma does is they collect points by touching the Ki (The ball) to the Pou's (Poles).  They can touch Pou's as many they want. They can redeem the points by touching the Pawero (The white part) of the field.

But at the same time, they have to avoid to get touch by the other teams. If the other team touch you, you can still carry on but when they touch you like 3 times with different people, It's a hand over that means the other teams get the Ki (The ball).

The Kioma has also at least 2 Kaitiaki players inside to protect the Tupu (The centre target bin) from the other teams of getting score by hitting the Tupu. If the 2 Kaitiaki want to get out of the Te Wairua (Which is the place where they are on before) well they can, They just have to go to Te Ara (The path where they can go in and out).

Taniwha - What Taniwha does is that they get points by hitting the Kito the Tupu, But they also need to look out from Kioma players because they might get touched and the same thing as Kioma when theTaniwha players get touched by the Kioma players 3 times in different people then they need to hand the ball.

But when they touch the player but the player already passed it to somebody in their team then that doesn't count. The Taniwha players can stand at Te Roto to hit the Ki to the Tupu. But they need to remember that the 2 Kaitiaki players can touch them if they are too close.

Te Ao - It's what you call it the place surrounds the 7 Pou's.

Here's what the field looks like:
The Ki o Rahi game has a unique circular field.

This is such an amazing blog post and I hope many other people start to play this one of a kind amazing sport. It is great to see that you guys have started playing this because her at Yaldhurst we had the amazing opportunity of getting to play this multiple times and the sharing what we did and how to play on the known TV show called What Now! Do You Know them?

I really hope that you continue playing sports like this and sharing them onto your wonderful learning blog!

Maybe to make this post even better you could add in a super speedy video of some kids playing this game but it did also help that you added in all of the rules and even a diagram of how to play Good Job.

  2. Kia ora,
    My name is Grace,
    I'm from Yaldhurst Model School.

This is a great blog for people who don't know what the game is ,
I did play the game with a team at Hornby school not the high school)
But I did that last year.

What you could improve is that you could of made a video of a bunch of people playing so they can get a better idea.

Yaldhurst School was on What Now and we played the game on camera.

But that was a year ago as well.

Anyways apart from that its really good.

    Kind regards
    Grace,

  5. Hey 7/8 TZ, my name is Parwin and I am a year 8 from Yaldhurst Model School. I really liked your blog post because you included images and the rules of the games. The last diagram of how the game works looks really cool! Did you make any of the photo's or did you just insert them? This reminded me of when I went to a Kio Rahi torment from my school, it was really fun! I personally really like Kio Rahi because it includes teamwork because you have to pass it around to score points because the other team would be chasing you. I think that you guys did a really awesome blog post, keep it up! Did everyone enjoy the game? I know that we did! Awesome job!

Looking forward to your next posts,
    Parwin

  6. Kia Ora, My name is Julia and I am a year 8 student at Yaldhurst Model School.

I liked the way that you explained how to play the game 'Ki O Rahi', it was simple but detailed which made it very easy to read and understand.

This post reminded me about earlier on this year when we played some Ki O Rahi, and the years before that learning it as a new game to us as our school.

Next time, to improve on this post, maybe you could make something more exciting, i.e. Google Slides, Canva, Biteable.

What is your favourite part about Ki O Rahi? Do you prefer being Taniwha or Kioma? I prefer being Kioma.

Apart from that I really enjoyed the this post and I hope you keep it up. These are some tools I like using which makes my learning more interesting to do.

    Kind Regards

  9. Kia ora Thank you for your explanation of the rules. This is a very detailed post on how to play Ki o Rahi and it looks like you are having a great time. The google drawings are great and although you can play with a modern ball how cool would it be to play with a traditional ball?
